Light and shadow playing across the face create different shapes. Thus the shape of the face changes according to the light and hence lights play an important role in making a models portfolio. If you love to do photography you should be aware of at least one or two techniques of lighting. This will help you to take awesome pictures.
Split Lighting
Split lighting is exactly the same as the name suggests – it divides the face into equal halves with one side being in the light, and the other in shadow. Such type of lighting technique is used in art works and dramatic images that include portraits. Split lighting is more appropriate for men as compared to the woman because it seems to be a more masculine pattern.
To attain split lighting you just have to put the light source 90 degrees to the left or right of the subject, and possibly even slightly behind their head. The placing of the light depends on the face of the person in relation to the subject. Adjust the light according to your observation of a falling light.
Broad Lighting
Broad lighting usually creates a broad or a wide face. This happens because the part of the face that is facing the camera i.e. the part which is in the light area is wider than the section of the face that is present in shadow. This light can be used on someone whose face is narrow and slim. Most people, however, want to look slimmer, so this type of lighting would not be suitable for someone who is heavier or round faced.
To achieve this type of photography, place the light opposite the direction of the subject’s face. For instance, if the subject is looking to the left of the camera, place the light to the right of the camera.
Short Lighting
Short lighting will create a narrow and slim face. This happens because the part of the face that is facing the camera i.e. the part which is in the shadow area is narrower than the section of the face that is present in light.
To achieve this of photography, place the light in the same the direction of your subject’s faced. For example, if the subject is looking to the left of the camera, place the light to the left of the camera.
